EVALUATION SCHEME FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS
of Schools of Arts, Engineering, Education, Management, and Sciences
(July 2008)
1. Academic performance of students shall be evaluated on the basis of individual course for all the courses registered for the program.The final grade will be determined by aggregating the course-wise grades.
2. Performance of a student shall be judged by
- Continuous in-semester assessment carried out by the concerned course tutor, and
- End-semester examination carried out by the University.
3. In any semester a student shall register for all the courses offered by the School in that semester as per the approved curriculum of the concerned program.4a. The course-wise weights for the continuous in-semester assessment and end-semester examination shall be as given below:

4b. However, the concerned Subject Committee, if necessary, may change the weights for any course which shall be applicable for the concerned course in the concerned program as approved by the Dean of the concerned School
5a. The end-semester examination shall be of three hours duration for all the courses except for those designated as ‘practical’.In case of practical courses the duration of the theory examination will be two hours.5b. For the courses designated as ‘practical’, the viva or other practical examinations component of the end-semester examination shall be conducted by the concerned college using the subject experts as approved by the Dean.
6.For the end-semester examination, the structure of the question paper of all courses other than those designated as ‘practical’ shall be as follows:

7.For the end-semester examination, the structure of the question paper of the theory part of the courses designated as ‘practical’ shall be as follows:

8. The continuous in-semester assessment shall be taken by the concerned course tutor in any of the following ways:
- Written test
- Quizzes
- Workshop practice
- Practical works
- Project work
- Viva-voce
- Open book test
- Home assignment
9. The concerned course tutor shall submit the in-semester assessment records within a week of assessment to the concerned program coordinator or principal who shall submit the final marks of the continuous in-semester assessment to the Dean’s Office one week before the start of the end-semester examination failing which admission cards of the examination will not be issued to the college and results of the concerned batch/program will be withheld.
10. A student must secure minimum 40 percent marks in the in-semester assessment for him/ her to be eligible for sitting in the end-semester examination. In case of the practical courses, he/she must secure 50 percent marks.11. A student must obtain minimum 40 percent marks in the end-semester examination to pass a course.
12.A student who has secured less than 40 percent in any course(s) – less than 50 percent in the practical course(s) – in the continuous in-semester assessment and thus barred from taking the end-semester examination must seek permission from the Dean to repeat the course(s).The Dean reserves the right to permit or not to permit the student to retake the course(s).The student can retake such course(s) as and when the course(s) are offered in the regular semester.
13.A student who has secured 40 percent or more in the continuous in-semester assessment (and 50 percent or more in the practical courses) but fails to obtain a passing grade in the end- semester examination can re-sit in the compartmental examination and in the end- semester examination of the same course as provided for in clause 16.
14a. In each course a student shall be evaluated on a four point scale by giving letter grades representing grade values as follows:

14b.A student may register for a maximum of two non-credit courses during the entire program with the approval of the concerned Dean but the student will not be graded for these courses.
15a.The combined total marks obtained by the students in both the in-semester assessment and the end-semester examination shall be converted into letter grades as follows:

15b. Counting of a student’s in-semester assessment mark for the purpose of grading him/her in a course is subject to the student’s percent in the internal assessment not exceeding the percent he/she scores in the end-semester examination by more than 25 percent. If the percent of the in-semester mark is greater than 25 percent than the percent the student has obtained in the end-semester examination, his/her in-semester assessment mark will be cancelled and he/she will be graded by giving 100 percent weight to his/her end-semester examination mark.
16a. If a student fails up to two courses in a semester, he/she shall be allowed to proceed to the following semester on condition that he/she will pass the course(s) in the subsequent examinations arranged by the University. The student shall be allowed only three chances to appear in the failed subjects as follows:
- First compartment examination will be held within a month of the publication of results of the regular end-semester examination as notified by the University.
- If the student fails in the first compartment examination, he/she will be allowed to reappear in the next regular end-semester examination of that course.
- If he/she again fails in this attempt, he/she will be allowed to reappear again in the following compartment examination.
16b.If the student fails in all the examinations appeared as above, he/she may be allowed to repeat the course in the regular semester in which the course is offered by the Dean. Only after getting a pass grade in the course thus repeated, the student shall be allowed to pursue the remaining courses of the study program as per the normal schedule.
17.If a student fails in more than two courses in a semester, he/she may be allowed to repeat the courses in the regular semester in which the courses are offered by the Dean. Only after getting a pass grade in the repeated courses, the student shall be allowed to pursue the remaining courses of the study program as per the normal schedule.
18.A student passing compartment or other examinations of the failed or repeat courses shall get maximum A- grade.
19.No student shall be allowed to carry more than two “Fs” grades in total at any point during the normal semesters in the entire program except when he/she is repeating the courses with the approval of the Dean.
20. The SGPA of a student must remain 2 or above throughout the duration of his/her studies. A student who has not obtained the minimum SGPA by the end of any semester but has passed all courses shall be allowed to continue his/her study but he/she will have to take examination to improve his/her grade to make up the minimum SGPA at each semester. The student will sit for such make up examination for any two courses offered in the concerned semester when the University offers those courses.
21.A student who has successfully completed a course shall not be permitted to reappear for that course except for the purpose of the provisions of clauses 20.
22. No student can pass the level with “F” in any particular course.
23.A student who has abstained from or not completed the final examination or has been expelled from the examination hall by the university authority will be considered to have failed the examination.
24. The maximum duration for completion of the undergraduate program for a student is seven years from the date of admission in that program. The student must clear all the course requirements, including all the provisions of this evaluation scheme within this period.
25.This evaluation scheme will be applicable to the 2006 and subsequent batches of the School of Management from the Spring Semester 2008 and to the 2008 and subsequent batches of the School of Arts, School of Engineering, and School of Sciences.
